KB Blitz: The Lady’s Arrangement

The Lady’s Arrangement by Colleen L. Donnelly

GENRE: Historical Fiction

BLURB:

Neither Rex nor Regina wants a spouse, but they do have needs.

Ranger Rex Duncan needs a false identity—just long enough to uncover a ring of Kansas ranch thieves. Answering Regina’s ad for a temporary husband, he leaves his beloved red dirt of Oklahoma to assume that disguise. But the most obstinate woman he’s ever known confounds his assignment, and with hair the red color that has always made his heart beat a little faster.

Regina Howard needs a new Mrs. in front of her name—just long enough to reclaim her deceased husband’s ranch, since Kansas law won’t allow women to own property. When Rex answers her ad for a husband who can take orders as part of a brief business arrangement, she finds this stubborn man ignores her every command. Yet a good man is far more than just a name…

EXCERPT:

“There’s a gully up ahead. Jess knows it’s there, but your horse doesn’t, and it looks like it’s running amok.”

“Amok?”

“Wild. Crazy.”

“That’s called hieing where I’m from. And I told you, Walter won’t run wild with your boy.” I pictured her gully as a dip, nothing more than that in land laid out flatter than the bottom of a griddle.

“You’ve got to stop him! See it up ahead? That sharp drop into that old creek bed?”

I did see it, the change in the line of blowing prairie, the bend in the lay of the land. The widow was right. I urged Boss on. Walter was powerful, as tired as he had to be, running strong at Jess’s insistence. But he’d slow when he heard me. We inched closer, close enough Walter could hear before he reached the gully I knew he’d handle just fine but the boy might not. I lifted my head into the wind and let out a whistle. Walter’s rump dropped, his front legs stiffened. Jess flew over his head, a spindly ball of arms and legs rolling hard through the prairie.

Regina screamed. More shrill than my whistle, the wail of both echoing from my ears to my chest. A call of love. Like the sound a little brother made when he shouted, “Stop” at someone running from their burning ranch. Or the sound a stepmother made when she begged two boys to be careful around red things—like fire. Like the red-haired woman behind me crying out to her son. Another boy I’d somehow done wrong.

Love always seemed to happen this way—so shrill, so harsh, so dire…so red.

KB Review: One Truth Revealed by Robena Grant

One Truth Revealed by Robena Grant

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

At thirty-five-years of age, and with pressure from her adoptive mother, Lina Bright is ten days away from undergoing Artificial Insemination in London. She doesn’t need a husband. She travels to Oldcastle to meet her biological mother, a spinster who runs a village teashop. To keep her mother’s secret, but determine her father’s identity, she creates the cover of scouting for property to start a new school.

A bachelor at forty, Drew Compton is an English Professor in Oxford. Diagnosed with “poor swimmers” his fiancée left him. He plans to live out his life alone, with his books. Disliking his mother’s secrets and controlling ways, he seldom returns to Oldcastle. But a chance meeting has him intrigued. Who is this chic Londoner?

As Lina’s plans for a school become a reality, romance blossoms, but roadblocks ensue.

Will Lina and Drew trust in each other to overcome the difficulties and create a future together?

Excerpt:

Heat. She craved his heat. Her arms encircled the back of his neck, pulled his face tighter,

closer, her lips tingled and begged to be crushed harder.

“Lina,” he whispered, his breath fanning her cheek. Then he took her mouth possessively.

She almost couldn’t remain standing. “Again,” she murmured. The headiness of his kisses, the heat swirling in her belly, the weakness in her knees, had her pressing even closer. Their tongues met, tangled in a mating dance she’d rarely experienced. Everything about this man spelled permanence. The girls below shouted, “Keep him, we want him.” Dazed, she pulled away, took in a deep breath, and refocused.

If she didn’t keep her wits about her she’d be dragging Drew into the shelter of the ruins and having her way with him. Could this castle be a magic place? Did it encourage romance, and illicit rendezvous? Rendezvous? Oh, blast it; she couldn’t get involved. There were nine days left until her expected ovulation. She’d chosen her sperm donor. She’d committed to doing this, and had an appointment scheduled with a London clinic. That’s why she had to go back.

Drew rested his forehead against hers. “Everything okay?”

The Review:

One Truth Revealed is a smartly-written and sweet romance. Taking place mostly in an old town where everybody knows everything about everyone, this cozy story is like a visit with old friends. Lina is lost, floundering in her attempt to find a place where she feels like she belongs. She doesn’t feel at home in London, where she was raised, or with her adoptive parents, and she goes in search of her birth parents. Drew fled Oldcastle years before to escape his overbearing mother. Both make their way to this little Doc Martin-type town and fine each other.

Their attraction is immediate, and the love story that follows forces them to face their parental issues. I liked this book and its unhurried pace. I liked Lina and Drew. I felt bad for Lina when it came to artificial insemination, though. When I went through it 15 years ago, the technology was much more advanced and the outcome much more certain, especially for someone with her good health history. I loved how supportive and nonjudgmental Drew was. I cracked up at how quickly and how Britishly they got over misunderstandings. My Irish-Italian temper would have gone off on those people and held a grudge for years. But the British aren’t like that. They’re all “Oh, you broke my heart. Would you like some tea?”Lina and Drew both felt bad for what I would consider justified reactions. Grant’s portrayal of them just made me like them all the more.

I loved every second of One Truth Revealed.

KB Blitz: The Reluctant Debutante

The Reluctant Debutante by Wendy May Andrews

GENRE: Historical Romance (Regency)

BLURB:

The Duke of Wychwood seeks retribution from the Earl of Pickering. When he finds out the earl has a beautiful young niece, the duke thinks to involve her in his feud, but is shocked to discover he is attracted to her.

The orphaned niece of the earl, Lady Victoria, serves as governess to four of his children and is made to feel like an interloper in her own home. A chance encounter with the duke affords her the opportunity to enter Society, but to take it means risking what little security she has.

Revenge and love don’t sit well together, to have a future can they learn to give up the past?

Excerpt: from chapter 3 – first time heroine sees hero

All she could do was try to cuddle the small child until he began to calm. She hugged him to her and spoke soft, comforting words into his ear. As his wails began to slowly subside, she again glanced up to the bank of the river. She almost dropped Daniel in surprise, as on the bank staring down at her were three handsome men.

A fierce blush stole over her entire body, which served to momentarily warm her against the chill of the water swirling around her. One of the men was particularly striking, and, despite herself, Victoria had trouble tearing her eyes away from his. The man did not seem to care how rude he was being in staring at her, and seemed mesmerized by her nonsensical mutterings to her young charge. Finally, he caught himself from his reverie and sprang into action.

Stripping his perfectly tailored coat from his shoulders was a momentary effort. Disregarding the hard work of his tailor and valet, the duke shrugged out of it and tossed it to his brother as he called over his shoulder to Fred. “Bring our horses closer. If I cannot leverage her up the bank on my own, they can be of assistance.”

Keeping his voice as low and calm as possible, Bryghton reached down towards the frightened child. “Hand him over to me. We shall get him on shore first, and then we can more easily pull you up.”

Despite having calmed down, at these words Daniel tightened his grip on his only means of survival and let out another frightened wail.

“Daniel, my darling, it is going to be all right. This kind man is going to pull you up and give you to Pansy. Pansy will have a lovely warm blanket to wrap you in and I am quite sure she still has a couple of those delicious cookies you loved so much. If you are very brave and let go of me, I promise you can have the biggest piece of dessert that Cook has prepared for us tonight.”

KB Interview: Sara Turnquist–A Convenient Risk

A Convenient Risk by Sara R. Turnquist

Any weird things you do when you’re alone?

Make crazy faces in the mirror. Or on my phone’s Marco Polo app. Just to see what my crazy self looks like. It’s a problem.

What is your favorite quote and why?

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” ~ Helen Keller

This quote in and of itself is nice, but is made more profound when you consider the author of the quote. Helen Keller saw nothing but darkness (as she was blind). But she says here, to keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow. What hope, what inspiration, what joy she must have had that went above her circumstances!

Who is your favorite author and why?

I love Melanie Dickerson’s work. She has taken popular fairy tales (and some obscure fairy tales) and set them in what could be a real place and time in history. Then she tells the story as if it actually happened (being Historical Fiction/Romance, of course). But they are amazingly well done.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

Good storytelling, drawing the reader in, decent writing (no gross negligence in typos and other egregious errors), an intriguing plot, and well developed characters

Where did you get the idea for this book?

It started when I visited a cemetery with a friend who just enjoyed the history of places and people. So, we saw a set of tombstones that depicted what must have been a woman who married a much older man, he died, then she married a man much closer to her own age. It got me thinking about second marriages. Perhaps in that particular case, the first was arranged and the second was by choice. But it didn’t stop me from thinking about how we tend to memorialize people who have passed on and glaze over the negative. Could a second spouse with very human flaws compete with a first dearly departed spouse (who had flaws too, but we ignore them in our glossy memories). This was the nugget, the kernel, that grew and developed into this story.

GENRE: Historical Romance

BLURB:

He never imagined her heart would be so hard to reach.

Forced into a marriage of convenience after her husband dies, Amanda Haynes is determined she will never love again. Not that it bothers Brandon Miller. He needs her husband’s cattle. She needs financial stability and long-term support for her son and herself. But she never expected to care so much about the running of the ranch. Or the rancher.

Butting heads over the decisions of the ranch, adding to her frustration and grief at her loss. Her wellbeing is soon threatened as their lives become entangled with Billy the Kid and his gang. What has she gotten herself into? What kind of man has she married? Is there any way out?

Excerpt:

A strong arm grasped Amanda, catching her upper arm and dragging her onto the horse. As soon as she was solidly on the animal, she grabbed ahold of Brandon as tightly as she could.

They took off. The bull pawed at the ground, making all manner of grunting noises, but as if by some miracle, he ran off to the left. All of this happened as if time had slowed.

The horse continued to push forward. And as they neared the edge of the fence, Brandon urged the horse to go even faster. Were they going to break through? What would happen to the cattle with the fence destroyed?

But as they approached the fence, the horse leapt. Amanda gripped Brandon impossibly tighter. Jolted when the horse landed, her teeth chattered.

Only then did Brandon slow the horse. He then placed a hand on her upper arm and pushed.

She released him.

He sucked in a deep breath and expelled it.

Had she been holding him too tightly? Her face warmed.

He took hold of her shoulders. “Are you all right?”

She nodded, and though their faces were but a breath apart, she was not quite able to meet his eyes, fighting tears in her own. Only then she found herself staring at his bare chest. Jerking her head away, she averted her gaze.

“Do you realize what could have happened?” His voice rose.

She nodded, still not able to meet his eyes. The force of his emotion hit her. Was he so concerned after her?

“I would have had to shoot that bull.”

What? Eyes wide, she tilted her face up to look at him.

“That bull is worth half my herd.”

So he was only worried about the cattle. Not her. His precious cattle.

KB Review: The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting by Deborah Wilde

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting (Nava Katz, #2)The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Sting by Deborah Wilde

Blurb: 50% boobs. 50% sarcasm. 100% new breed of hunter.

After a bumpy start as the only female demon hunter in the top secret Brotherhood of David, Nava Katz heads to Prague for her first undercover mission: unmasking a demon movie star. She’d be all kinds of thrilled if it weren’t for the fact that her fellow hunter-with-benefits, Rohan Mitra, has reclaimed his rock star status and assigned Nava the role of groupie.

Rejecting her “be a good girl and follow orders” directive, Nava unleashes an alter ego guaranteed to hook their celebrity target and drive Rohan crazy. No downside–until she finds herself up against Rohan’s past, the Brotherhood’s antiquated thinking, and her own identity issues, turning her personal life into the bomb that could blow up the entire operation.

Sparkly and deadly; it’s a plan.

My rating: Freaking Fantastic

Once in a while a series comes along that makes you drop everything you’re doing and lose yourself in that world. Then you want to stalk the author to make sure she’s working on your next fix. The Nava Katz series is this drug for me.

Things I loved:
1. Nava–or Lolita, as she’s going by in this one. She’s the badass heroine I want to meet in all my fiction. She has a past, and pain gives her depth. She’s the kind of person to whom everyone can relate on some level.

2. Chemistry. Wilde has a knack for kicking the reader in the ovaries even while titillating us with hot sex scenes. I love erotic romance where the hot scenes contribute to the character’s growth. Now, I’m not going to give any spoilers away, but I almost cried during that last one, and I’m not one of those people who gets emotional while reading.

3. Rohan. The way Wilde writes the hero underscores the sanity in Nava’s insanity. If I was emotionally scarred like her, I’d definitely put concrete boundaries between Ro and me. Yet he’s not an asshole–more like a combination of clueless, lost, and uncertain how to handle Nava. I’ve been waiting two books for the ending of this one!

4. Always leave them wanting more. Wilde is gifted this way. I’ve loved both books in this series so far, and both times I’ve been both fulfilled and left wanting more.

5. Influences. Every great heroine and writer who has resonated with me is represented here in some way, the most obvious being Buffy/Whedon, though I see more Faith in her than Buffy.

6. Plot. The mission they went on to take down Samson was brilliantly designed to strip Nava bare and reveal every vulnerability and insecurity. Since this does not kill her, it leaves no choice but to make her stronger.

Things I disliked:
1. Nothing. I loved the characters, the heat, the mind-fuck of a plot–everything. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Notes for the future:
Rohan’s POV? Spinoff stories from the POV of Ari, Kane, Drio, Leo–ROHAN??? How about more female Rasha?

Sparkly and deadly; it’s a plan.

Excerpt:

Looping my fingers into his belt, I jerked his hips to mine. Rohan’s breath caught and when I brushed my lips over the shell curves of his ear, his whole body went tense. “Prove you’re worth it, baby.” Then I pushed him away, stalking off without a look back, mostly sure that he followed.

The second we got inside the empty elevator, Rohan shoved me up against the wall. I groped for the third floor button, leaning into him. He ran his hands feverishly over my body, hot tingles shivering through my breasts like a sexed-up call and answer. The focused hunger in his expression had me craving more, except my rapid breathing wasn’t all from arousal.

Given the barely banked rage evident in the tense bunch of Rohan’s shoulders, the feeling was mutual. Hopefully, he’d show no mercy in orgasm form and not body count, though I couldn’t promise the same right now.

I bit his earlobe, wanting to hurt him.

Rohan shot me a cavalier smile in response. Holy crap. My knees buckled.

The sprint to my room was a blur.

The second the door slammed shut behind us, Rohan edged his face in close to mine, his palm ghosting my cheek in the barest caress that sent slivery shimmers tumbling through me.

I raised my fingers to my mouth, not realizing what I’d done or that I ran them over my lips until Rohan tracked the movement, his eyes glittering dangerously.

His tongue flicked out, wetting his lower lip. He swayed in toward me and–

“No.” Taking his hands in mine, I forced them behind me. Forced him to hold me there, his rings biting into my skin. Forced him to make a decision; play by my rules or go.

A global wanderer, hopeless romantic, and total cynic with a broken edit button, Deborah writes urban fantasy to satisfy her love of smexy romances and tales of chicks who kick ass. The Review

If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably noticed that Deborah Wilde and her Unlikeable Demon Hunter are back. As I loved the first one so much that I’ve been subconsciously comparing everything I’ve read since then to it, salivation began the moment I was offered the chance to read book two!

KB Blitz: Hearthstone Alpha by AC Melody

Hearthstone Alpha by A.C. Melody

GENRE: Paranormal Erotic Romance

BLURB:

All Reyna Daniels wants is to secure her return home to Minneapolis. The last thing she needs is to find her world completely inundated by the magnetizing, hostile Corbyn Bruschard and his group of male-model friends.

Corbyn’s not ashamed at being everywhere, since it’s his territory, and he’s certainly not going to apologize for trying to keep Reyna safe. Especially when she’s his mate.

With all signs pointing to an old enemy’s return, Reyna’s going to have to suck it up and face her ancient Norse heritage fast. That doesn’t mean she has to accept being mated to an Alpha who threatens all of her hard-earned independence.

Excerpt:

His silvery eyes roamed her freely now, rather than trying to penetrate into her bones.

“Won’t that leave Serena and Justin alone?”

“No,” he answered, leveling her with a stubborn stare. “You’re not going to win this argument, Reyna. There is no way in hell we’re leaving anything to chance, not with those who matter most to us. Now, get over here.”

Reyna scoffed. As if!

“Please,” he added gently.

It took Reyna about ten seconds to reluctantly scoot across the bench seat, still leaving a good arms length between them, because it appeared he wasn’t going anywhere until she did. If he thought she was done with her side of their little compromising barter, though, he was in for a big surprise! She inhaled sharply, when Corbyn hooked his arm around her waist, lifted her, and set her down across his lap. Her feet faced the passenger door, her back cradled in the crook of his left arm still clutching the steering wheel.

Desire unraveled in her veins, starting in her toes and working all of the way up to the roots of her hair. Every inch of her was once again hyper-aware of every inch of him, and she fought hard to keep her composure intact.

“Do you really think distance keeps you safe, falleg?” he asked softly, brushing her ponytail out from between the back of her head and his shoulder.

Fawk…what? “Did you just call me fugly?” she snapped.

“Not even close,” he replied. “Answer the question, Reyna. I’m onto your evasion tactics.”

Well, aren’t we clever?

KB Interview: Running Wild Anthology

Kissing Bandits Interview with Lisa Diane Kastner

KB: Welcome to Kissing Bandits Blog! Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Thank you for having me.  I’m the founder and executive editor of Running Wild Press. I’m also an author of fiction, nonfiction, articles, and essays. For the Running Wild Anthology of Stories, Volume 1, I’m the editor and I have a piece within the anthology.

KB: Tell us a little bit about your most recent release.

The Running Wild Anthology of Stories, Volume 1 was developed with the desire to provide great stories with wonderful voices from some authors you may have heard and others that may be totally new to you.  The anthology consists of a wide variety of story types from humorous non-fiction to a narrative poem to mystery/horror to literary fiction to a Tom Sawyer-esque fictional outing.  With the intent that everyone will find something to enjoy. And even better, the eBook of the anthology is for sale during the virtual tour for 99 cents!

KB: What has been the most exquisite moment of your life?

The day I met my husband. I had given up on dating and decided to focus on work and my friends and myself.  He and I met at a coffee shop in downtown Philadelphia. I saw him and thought he was the most gorgeous man I had ever seen. Then he started talking to me and here was this tremendous soul, brilliant and kind man. I felt privileged to call him a friend.  That day, I met my best friend, my soul mate, my heart, and my partner in life.

KB: What was your defining moment as a writer?

The day I decided to jump into the deep end and submitted the first short story I had written as an adult to the Philadelphia Writers Conference. I attended the conference because at the time the instructor would critique your work.  For me, this was the ultimate test.  If the instructor said it was crap then I would ditch writing.  If the instructor said it was good or okay, then I would keep working at it.

My instructor pulled me (and a few others) aside and said he had to talk to us one on one. I was terrified. I thought I must have written the worst piece he had ever seen. During a break, he pulled me into an empty conference room and took out my short story. He told me I was a natural story teller and meant to be a writer. He glowed about all the elements he loved about the piece. I nearly cried.

Throughout my writing and editing career I have had pivotal moments like this and I’m blessed for each one.

KB: What are your top three guilty pleasures?

Wow, only three?

Okay, in no particular order – manicures and pedicures from Oasis Spa in Burbank, Ca.  The environment is magical, the people are lovely, and after 90 minutes in that chair, I am butter.

My next guilty pleasure is right down the street from Oasis and it’s a well known establishment in Los Angeles called Portos. It’s a family-owned and operated bakery and restaurant with some of the most fantastic sandwiches and pastries bar-none.  Everything has a Cuban flare. Well worth the trip.

My third guilty pleasure is wearing my husband’s t-shirts to bed. We both travel extensively for work so when we can’t be together I like to have him with me even if it’s via a hole-ridden t-shirt.

KB: What kinds of female characters do you prefer to write?

I prefer to write fun, quirky, smart female characters that figure things out. They may not start off as the strongest or the most independent or the best but by the end of the story they have learned something or grown in ways that readers can identify with.

KB: What is the biggest risk you’ve taken in your writing?

I read all genres and forms. You can find a great story in every one. By reading broadly this enables me to use techniques and learn from storylines that I may not otherwise be exposed to if I limited myself to only a few genres. I’m a true believer that innovative ideas and stories come from learning in the most unexpected ways and typically I don’t find the unexpected unless I put myself out there to experience it.

KB: What is something nobody would guess about you?

I’m not sure. Most people are surprised I’m an introvert. I really work to put myself out there in front of others.

Excerpt:

“Susan winks at me as she says to her mother, “We’re going to the playground. We’ll be back in a couple of hours.”

“Don’t be too late. It looks like rain. Come home at the first sign of drops, OK my girls?” Her mother gathers us in an embrace. Her mother is tall and massive. I’ve heard people call her “zaftig.” Her many folds of skin almost choke me as she puts her fat over my face. I kiss her face as soon as I can breathe again.

I look at Susan, her blue eyes shine, her mouth pursed in a conspiratorial smile. Her copper red hair bounces as she shakes her head, and puts her finger to her lips. She cocks her head into her mother’s plump side as she mouths, “don’t tell.”

Susan’s my friend, my best friend. I know she’s lying to her mother, yet I say nothing. I believe we’re going to the playground like I believe I’ll be 6’ 5” when I grow up. At 12 years old and 4’10”, with parents who barely top 5’1”, the answer is the same, fat chance.”

Excerpt:

Mercy’s Rescue

She ventured a quick look but didn’t see a wedding ring. That meant nothing—many men didn’t wear rings. Her David would not have worn one either. He’d often said a ring would only get lost when he removed it to do surgery. The dark cloud of remembrance jolted her back to reality. Her job was done; she passed her patient over to the trauma team. There was no need for her to stay. With a last look at the man currently the focus of everyone’s attention, Mercy stepped outside the room. Her steps faltered as she realized that she’d automatically send a brief request on his behalf to whatever power the man might believe in; a request that the trauma specialists behind her would be able to use their combined expertise to keep him in this world for those who loved and needed him.

“Three minutes out. Descent begins in one.” The pilot’s voice crackled through the headset as he tossed a look over his shoulder to Mercy, strapped into the jump sear. She responded with a quick thumbs-up. “They’ve secured the scene,” he added. “We’re in and out fast. There’s only one to transport.” A dull, leaden weight sank to the pit of her stomach. Mercy Smith knew his words meant the other injured person had died before their arrival. “We can’t save them all, Mercy.” Paul Robards, the second medic onboard and seated across from her, responded to the shadowed look that crossed her face. “Some things are out of our control.”
