Owning Up (Awakenings 2) is now available!

The Reviews:

Sexy Sirens Book Blog: Outstanding Read. I love Ms. Zurlo’s style. Her flare for the dramatic and her way with words that makes the reader feel every word, every emotion and every nuance of the characters lives.

Dar (Goodreads): I absolutely loved this story, because it took me by surprise…I was right there with them, for the good, the sexy, the bad, the confusion, the love, the caring, the pain, the chemistry. It all swept off the pages and immersed me into the story.

Katey (GR): “Michele Zurlo weaves characters that draw you in and make you care about them, and then she lights their relationships on fire with passion and surprise.”

How about a hot little excerpt?

The door opened, and Stefano stood back to admit us. I followed Lex inside, and I looked around. At one end was a black wooden structure in the shape of an X. I’d never seen a St. Andrew’s cross before. This one was large and imposing. I noted the places where chains dangled. The rest of the room had chairs arranged in rows for observers.

Alexei and Stefano dominated the space even more than the cross did. Ellen retreated to the periphery of the room, a kind of safeword waiting in the wings.

“Remove your shirt, shoes, and pants,” Stefano directed. “And hand them to me.”

I did, not bothering with a striptease. I wasn’t here to titillate them. I was here to experience my first flogging. I removed my shoes and pants first, handing them over to Stefano. He folded my pants and placed them on a chair behind him. He set my shoes on the floor underneath. I shrugged out of my shirt and gave that to him as well.

Lex sucked in a breath, but he didn’t say anything. Stefano folded my shirt and set it on top of my pants. Then the pair faced me.

“Widen your stance a bit,” Alexei said. He moved to stand behind me, and I felt his hands on my waist. “Relax your shoulders, and lower your gaze.”

My gaze wandered down Stefano’s body, drinking in his sexy physique. I stopped when I was staring in the region of his zipper.

“A little more,” Stefano directed.

I dropped it to his feet.

“Don’t move your head,” Alexei said. “Just your eyes.”

I hadn’t realized I’d looked down. I brought my chin up while keeping my gaze on Stefano’s feet.

“Perfect.” Alexei drew a light caress down the center of my back, the sensual touch disappearing as he skipped over the strap of my bra. “Usually we’d begin with you kneeling, but right now, we don’t have control over the cleanliness of the floor.”

I appreciated his thoughtfulness.

“You can talk,” Stefano said. “Ask questions if you have them.”

“I’m okay,” I assured them without lifting my gaze. “I promise I’ll call red or yellow if I’m not.”

They seemed at ease. Alexei guided me to stand in front of the cross, and together, they buckled padded leather cuffs around my wrists and ankles. These were attached to the short chains, and just like that, I found myself bound to a St. Andrew’s cross. I tested the range of motion, and I found I could move a few inches. It wasn’t enough to go anywhere, but it was enough so that I didn’t feel too restricted.

My hair moved as deft hands wrangled it into a knot on top of my head. I froze to keep it from unraveling.

“You can relax. I have a little sister who wrapped me around her finger from the moment she was born, so I have a lot of practice with long hair. It’ll hold.” He ran his hands over my shoulders and down my back.

With my back to them, I wasn’t sure who had spoken.

“Lex or Stef?”

He chuckled and pressed a kiss to my nape. “We’ve stumped her for the first time.”

Another chuckle came from right next to the first one. “If you’re not sure, default to ‘Sir’ as your form of address.”

I wasn’t sure about the use of a title, but it was nice to have something to save me from calling either of my lovers by the wrong name. “Okay, but which one of you is close with your sister?”

“We both are.” Another laugh, and teeth nipped at my ear. “Sammy, we’re going to make you feel really fucking good. Rest your front side against the cross.”

“Yes, Stef.” I did as he asked.

The kiss he was pressing to my shoulder stalled. “How did you know it was me?”

“You always shorten my name. Lex doesn’t.”

He seemed to accept the explanation, which was good because it was all I had to go on right now. The hands on my body multiplied as they touched every inch of my skin from my calves to my neck.

From the periphery of my view, I noted that Ellen was there, my security blanket watching over me while staying out of the way. I closed my eyes and gave myself over to the sensations stimulating my skin. It didn’t take long for them to simultaneously arouse and relax me. I felt alive and awake, yet subdued and ready for anything.

The first swish of the flogger came a second before a soft thud on my shoulder that felt like a light massage. The sensation repeated down my right side, and then it switched to come down my left side. Up and down, they flogged me from shoulder to calf, skipping over my lower back, and it felt pleasant. I found myself relaxing into the rhythm. After a time, the thuds became sharper and harder, like the massage was finally getting serious. I relaxed even more, and pleasure clouded my mind.

The clink of metal on wood roused me. I looked up to find my wrist free. Sir brought my arm down, massaging my shoulder as he did.

I giggled.

A slanted grin quirked his mouth—Alexei’s smile. “What’s funny?”

“You, Lex. A massage after a massage.”

Shock momentarily stole his smile.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” he said. “I guess I’m amazed that you’re half out of your mind, and yet you identified me easily.”

“Your smile,” I explained. “You and Stef smile differently.”

“Mine is sexy. Yours is cocky.” Stefano made that claim as he freed my other arm.

“They’re both sexy and cocky.” They were. The biggest difference was that Lex’s smile was a little higher on the left side. Stefano’s quirked up to the right. “No fighting.”

Stefano draped a robe around my shoulders while Alexei put my arms through the sleeves. “Look at you, giving orders. It’s cute, Sammy, but submissives ask for what they want.”

Shards of Love (Jesse and Jessica 3) is Now Available

Wow–I’ve heard from a number of people about how much they LOVE this trilogy. It’s heartfelt, poignant, and unexpected.

The final book in the Jesse and Jessica trilogy is here! It’s a poignant story of love, loss, family, and forgiveness–and I hope you love it as much as I do!

When I set out to write this story, I had no idea it would be a trilogy. As I got to the end of Drawing On Love, I had to face the fact that their story could not be contained in one book. Once I got to the end of Broken Love, I knew that two books wasn’t enough. So I pushed on, and in ten days of marathon writing, I finished Shards of Love. My daughter named it during a family brainstorm session, and it perfectly captured the mess Jesse and Jessica had made of their relationship and the hardships they were set to endure.

Nobody is perfect, and I set out to capture that with this story. Jesse and Jessica are both deeply flawed. She’s spent her life trying to survive, and he’s about to endure things that are all too common in war zones around the world. This story of heartbreak, family, friendship, and love will leave you pleasantly battered.

For this one, you’re going to need a box of tissues.

And, if you can, please leave a review. I hate asking, but reviews drive algorithms, which make my books visible to readers. Thanks so much!

Blurb:

“I’d wanted the fairy tale, and somewhere along the line I’d forgotten that everyone in a fairy tale paid a price.”

All Jessica ever wanted was a family.

When the unthinkable happens, Jessica finds herself adrift in a sea of grief. It’s going to take everything she has to pull her life together and fight for the life she wants.

Excerpt:

“Brat, that’s enough. Jesse didn’t do this job for the money. None of us do. We do this because we know we make a positive difference in this world.”

“Bullshit,” she sneered. “You aren’t fooling anyone.” She slammed the heels of her palms into my chest.

This was different from when she’d slapped me before. She’d been stunned by her reaction as much as I had, and I saw immediately that she hadn’t meant to hit me as much as she’d wanted to smack away the information.

But now she was attacking me. She was in pain and lashing out.

With a neat twist of my arms, I captured her wrists and pinned them behind her back. “Brat, I know you’re upset, so let’s take a minute to calm down.”

She struggled against my hold. “I don’t want to calm down. I’ve been calm for months, and it hasn’t helped. I’m tired of being rational and good. I’m tired of feeling all this pain, and no matter what I do, it doesn’t go away. I’m tired of pretending for all of you that I’m fine when I feel like I died months ago.”

My heart broke at the raw pain written on her features and trembling in her voice. Without further thought, I lifted her onto my lap and held her against me.

Her whole body softened, and she melted into me. I cradled her head, and she rested her cheek against my chest. Her hand grasped at my shirt.

Though the wrong circumstances had landed her in my arms, protectiveness and pure joy surged through me. After all this time, we finally had more than a surface-level connection.

Thoughtful Heroes

When I was a teenager, I had a subscription to Sassy magazine. As a 13 yo, I loved it. By the time I was 14, I’d outgrown it. I decided to let the subscription run out, but it didn’t. It just kept coming. Finally one day, I remarked on this puzzling event to my dad, and he laughed. “I keep finding those subscription cards on the kitchen table, so I send them in. I thought you were leaving them for me because you wanted to renew the subscription.”

Thoughtful, right? I think about things like this sometimes when I’m creating my heroes.

David and Brea have been through a lot in their three books, and part of what he had learned is to be mindful of how her perspective is different from his (and vice versa) due to their previous experiences. He know that she has a ton of baggage, too much to tell him in a few months. He could literally spend a lifetime finding out about everything she’s said and done. At the end of the day, he has to trust that he knows her well enough to respond appropriately to anything that might come up. Here’s an excerpt where he finds out some pretty damning things about her, and he responds like a true hero.

Excerpt from Switching It Up:

I sat in my chair and opened the file. It contained eight-by-ten glossies. The top one showed a much younger Brea deep in conversation with an older man wearing wire-rimmed glasses. He looked familiar, but his name didn’t come to me. The next one was a satellite image that showed her in some kind of compound, a rifle slung over her shoulder. The third featured a swarthy man kissing her cheek, and the last two showed her speaking with groups of people. I picked out a known gun runner, two high-level drug dealers, and Eugene Bowen, the kidnapper she’d known as Brian Sullivan.

I closed the file folder. “What’s all this?”

“This is the woman you’re planning to marry. Are you aware of her background?”

While I knew a lot about her background, there was a ton that was still a mystery. For the most part, Brea didn’t like to talk about her past. She had secrets and things she just didn’t want to talk about, and I’d promised to respect her wishes. I lifted my shoulder in a noncommittal move. It was the ultimate passive-aggressive evasive maneuver.

Grayson chuckled. “I have to be honest, David. I never thought you’d be blinded by love. It’s kind of sweet.” He perched on the arm of the chair on the other side of my desk. “I looked into how the two of you met. The FBI agents with whom you worked filed reports, and I followed up with phone calls. Liam Adair and Keith Rossetti were quick to come to Brea’s defense, and that’s when I realized that she was a master con artist.”

Verbal games and intrigue weren’t funny when they involved my fiancée. “I’m aware of her past, as are you. Cut the bullshit and tell me why you came. I’m not changing my mind about the mission.”

“Fair enough.” He got to his feet, opened the file folder, and tapped his thumb on the older, bespectacled man speaking to a teenaged Brea. “That’s Luis Ramirez, wanted for smuggling drugs and arms in sixteen countries. He’s involved with human trafficking and efforts to arm home-grown insurgents in the US.” He flipped to the next picture. “This is a training facility for a Columbian drug cartel.”

I dismissed them both. “She’s never been to Columbia.” Of course I had no way of knowing if she had or not. In her secret box that she kept hidden from even me, I knew she had a stack of fake driver’s licenses and passports.

This time, Gray did the shrugging. “Associating with many of these people is treason. I don’t even have to arrest her or charge her with anything. There won’t be a trial. She has sensitive information that we need for purposes of national security. I can lock her in a cell in a black site and throw away the key.”

Cold fingers of rage wrapped around my vital organs. I rose slowly, facing my former CO, and it took every ounce of self-control not to kill him. Even if the photos weren’t real, I had no doubt that Gray would follow through on his threat because he believed in violence and retribution.

Dean greeted us at the top of the private staircase that connected the third and fourth floors. After our workout, I really wanted to take the elevator, but Frankie did not present that as an option, and I was afraid I’d lose any street cred I’d gained if I asked.

“Good workout?”

Frankie laughed. She had a husky, deep-throated laugh that always sounded genuine. “Not bad. I can still kick your ass later if you want.”

By sheer willpower, I made it up the last step. “She taught me how to get out from under someone who is sitting on my torso and choking me.”

Dean scratched his chin, and I saw a cut I hadn’t noticed before. “Did you know she’s trained in six different fighting disciplines? If she ever decides to become an MMA fighter, I’m betting on her.”

“I’d run the bets because the house always cleans up.” I grabbed his hand, halting the damage he was doing to his cut. “Let me put some antibiotic on that.”

Frankie rolled her eyes. “You should see the other guys.”

I didn’t know they’d been in a fight. I looked Frankie up and down, but I didn’t see a sign of injury. “What happened?”

“As our client feared, thieves attempted to steal the item while we were in transit. They were highly organized and skilled fighters. Six of them hit us while we were loading. Five of them are in the hospital.” With her trademark smile, she glided down the hall and disappeared around the corner.

I led Dean to his office where I knew he kept first-aid supplies. “What happened to the sixth person?”

“He gave up fighting after Frankie introduced his balls to his spine. I’ve never heard a human being make a sound that high in pitch.” He chuckled and sat on the guest chair facing the other side of his desk while I retrieved the first-aid kit from a shelf.

That’s when I noticed his new safe. It was beautiful, a plain, metallic gray strongbox that sat next to another safe. That one, which always sat out on his shelf, was a work of hand-crafted art. However, the new one caught my interest, and I breathed an exclamation. “Oh, Dean.”

“You’re sympathizing with the bad guys?” A note of incredulity crept into his voice, though he mostly sounded like he was teasing.

Though I’d grown up being one of the bad guys, I knew he didn’t honestly believe that I’d sympathize with his adversary. No, I was enthralled with his new safe. It was a Vault, a special edition safe from Vault and Security. They made between ten and fifty of a single design, each with a continuous weld and 6-gauge steel. I’d heard rumors that the locking bolts extended four inches into the frame, and that it contained a secondary set of locking bolts in the body of the safe that extended and twisted to form an even stronger bond. In order to get into that safe without knowing the combination, a thief would have to be a fucking awesome safe cracker, which I was, or they’d have to use an explosive to open it. A pry bar, ax, or sledgehammer wouldn’t work. The idea of getting into that thing made me wet. “I think I’m in love.”

EXCERPT:

Griff was struck dumb. He moved aside to let Marnie pass. Pieces started to fit together. The spoon. The nightmare. How does Bob fit into this? Anger at being lied to stoked his fire. He was determined to get at the truth.

At the front door, he stood by to let the women leave. Lauren was in the living room, cleaning up the coffee cups and cake plates. Griff leaned against the wall.

She turned as if she felt him standing there. “Hi. You’re home early.”

“Yeah. Just in time to see your book club leave. Seems like you meet often. For a book club, that is.”

Lauren avoided his stare. “Well, sometimes a new book—”

“Stop lying, Lauren. I know it’s not a book club. What the hell is going on?”

“Nothing that concerns you.” She turned away from him.

Griff gripped her upper arm, hard. “I disagree. We’re gonna talk. The truth. Now.” He sat her down in a chair in the kitchen while he retrieved a beer.

“I don’t see where you—”

“Last night gives me the right to know the truth. Talk.” He offered her a beer, too, which she accepted.

“Okay, okay.”

He straddled another chair, put his bottle to his lips, and eyed her. “Start talking.”

She squirmed a bit, cast her gaze at the floor, and cleared her throat.

“At me. Look at me,” he said, motioning with his fingers.

“All right…”

Excerpt:

Bracing her foot against his—without crossing the line—she leaned over and picked up a mint with her teeth. Before he could pull her, she was back. He bent his knees to line up his mouth with hers. “This doesn’t count as kissing.”

With the peppermint effectively gagging her, she couldn’t respond.

He used his tongue to take the candy, dipping into her mouth to snake it around the treat. His bowl was closer, and he was taller, so he didn’t need her leverage to make the deposit.

She didn’t dawdle. As soon as he was upright, she grabbed the next one. They worked quickly and efficiently, though each time his lips came into contact with hers, he had to force himself not to take his time and explore the sparks that kept igniting. Later he’d dazzle her with his tongue wrestling skills.

“Time!”

The verbal buzzer sounded as Bree was on her way to get another peppermint. David pulled her back to him, wrapped his free arm around her bare waist, and reined in the passion simmering in his veins. Her gaze fixated on his lips, and he wondered if she truly was a switch and, if so, was she in submissive headspace right now? Pushing aside the reasons his mission sanctioned his actions, he traced his thumb along her lower lip before cupping the side of her head with the hand still bound to hers. “This counts.”

He closed his mouth over hers, taking what he wanted. She tasted of mint and a sweetness that had nothing to do with sugar. Her body softened against his, and she tilted her head a little more to give him better access. Chemical reactions burst through his senses in a series of tiny detonations that drove him to deepen his foray. She grasped his sleeve, her nails digging the slightest bit into his arm, and a soft, kittenish moan sounded in the back of her throat.

Kissing Bandits Blitz: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

Kissing Bandits Presents: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BBT_AllIn_Banner copyBLURB: In the cutthroat world of Sweden’s financial elite, no one knows that better than corporate raider David Hammar. Ruthless. Notorious. Unstoppable. He’s out to hijack the ultimate prize, Investum. After years of planning, all the players are in place; he needs just one member of the aristocratic owning family on his side—Natalia De la Grip.

Elegant, brilliant, driven to succeed in a man’s world, Natalia is curious about David’s unexpected invitation to lunch. Everyone knows that he is rich, dangerous, unethical; she soon discovers he is also deeply scarred.

The attraction between these two is impossible, but the long Swedish nights unfold an affair that will bring to light shocking secrets, forever alter a family, and force both Natalia and David to confront their innermost fears and desires.

Excerpt Three:

MediaKit_BookCover_AllIn“I don’t usually discuss my, uh, private interests with men.” She closed her eyes. “I can’t believe I’m considering telling you this, but I collect French underwear. I buy it online. It’s very expensive and completely irrational. Most of it isn’t even wearable.”

She opened her eyes.

David was studying her intently. “Tell me more things that make you blush. You’re very attractive, in a non-corporate-finance way, when you’re blushing.”

Natalia shook her head. She reached for the thermos as an excuse to avoid looking at him. “I think that’s enough of a revelation for tonight,” she said. “Your turn.”

“Hmm, what do you want to know?”

Natalia cocked her head, and they looked at each other over the remains of their picnic. Oh, there was a lot she wanted to know. Why had he asked her out? What wasn’t he telling her about his past?

What was that coldness she glimpsed in him sometimes all about? And most of all, of course: did he think they would be having sex with each other in the near future?

“What would you have done if you didn’t do what you do now?” she asked instead.

“I think I’d sail around the world. Give up the Internet, read books.” He laughed. “Maybe learn to cook.”

“You can’t cook?”

“Can you?” he dared her.

“I opened a jar of pickles the other day. Does that count?”

His eyes twinkled. “I don’t think so.”

“What did you do during your military service?” she asked. “I have two brothers, but you know, strangely enough, I’ve never asked them.”

“Romp around outdoors, get chewed out, work like a dog,” he said. “But I actually liked it. We followed orders, got a lot of exercise, slept well at night.” He fell silent.

She listened to the waves lapping. She heard a dog barking somewhere onshore.

He turned to her, raised himself up on his elbows. “Are you still cold?” he asked. “Should I go get a blanket?”

Natalia slowly shook her head.

David looked into her eyes. He reached out his hand and she held her breath. He grazed her pearl necklace with his fingers and she blinked. He fingered the heavy clasp, which had slid to the front.

“What kind of pattern is this?” he asked.

She swallowed, trying to sound casual despite his fingers brushing over the base of her throat. A finger caressed her collarbone, almost absentmindedly. “The family crest,” she said, her pulse racing under his fingertips. “My brothers each wear it on their signet rings. I wear it on the clasp of my necklace.”

“Because you have a title? You’re a countess?”

“Yes.”

She couldn’t interpret the expression on his face. He was staring at the heavy gold clasp as if it meant something. Then he looked at her again, without taking his hand away. He leaned forward but stopped. And Natalia surprised herself. She moved her own hand behind his head, impatient and bold. They came together over the remains of their picnic, and he kissed her lightly, no more than a flutter over her lips. He lingered a second or two, warm and a little rough.

Natalia tried to think clearly, but felt only desire. There was no, no reason not to do this. It was as if she’d been waiting her whole life for this, she thought, to be kissed on an ostentatious yacht in the middle of the archipelago by David Hammar, who tasted like tiramisu.

This is the fifth book in the fan favorite Doms of the FBI series. If you haven’t stumbled upon this series yet, this book stands alone, though characters from previous books do appear in it.

Blurb:

released 500Honoring a promise he made to his late mother, David Eastridge, part owner of SAFE Security, returns home one final time—to help his father find the culprit responsible for embezzling three million dollars from his company. It should be an easy job—his father already has a suspect in mind.

After a series of tragic events that robbed her of a father and put her sister in a coma, Autumn Sullivan was forced to take on several jobs just to get by. She’s an accounting assistant by day, an occasional service Domme on the weekend, and a thief-for-hire by night.

David’s strategy of hiring Autumn—as a submissive—backfires when he finds himself enchanted by her sense of humor and playful attitude. Determined to prove her innocence, he enlists the help of Malcolm Legato and Agent Keith Rossetti to dig deeper. This enigmatic submissive is openly hiding things from him. Her secretive nature and the bread crumbs she drops about her past don’t add up—not even when he assigns Jesse Foraker, his SAFE Security buddy—to tail her and search her apartment. None of them are prepared for what the FBI uncovers.

Falling in love wasn’t in the plan, but David makes her believe that she isn’t doomed to live a solitary life. Plunged into a world of lies and espionage—with a serial killer after her—Autumn is forced to come to terms with her past if she is to have any hope of a future with David.

Blitz Tour Excerpt 3:

He released her arm and stepped away. “Take off your shoes. You can put them on the rug next to the door.”

It wasn’t a request, and he didn’t bother pretending it was something it wasn’t. A surprised laugh, short and dry, escaped. “You’re already giving orders?”

“Yes.”

It had been a long, long time since she’d allowed anyone to dominate her. Sure, she’d bottomed for him, but it wasn’t the same thing, and she wasn’t sure how much and what kind of control she was ceding. Still, trust had to start somewhere. “So, that’s the way it’s going to be with us, is it?”

“Unless you object.”

She didn’t want to object. No part of her was against this, and her intuition chimed in with full support. She slipped out of her heels, and now when she faced him, she had to tilt her face up even more. “I don’t object.”

A soft smile lifted the corners of his mouth. “Good. We’re on the same page. Have you eaten?”

While she frequently grabbed something not memorable on her way to or from the nursing home, she hadn’t today. “Not yet.”

“Good. I made dinner.” Taking her hand, he led her to the sliding door. “It’s a nice night. We’ll eat on the patio.” He pulled out a chair and helped her sit. “Wine?”

Remembering the terms she’d unwittingly laid out the night before, a shiver of anticipation did cartwheels up her spine. “Are you hoping I kiss you before I leave?”

His eyelids fell to half-mast, and his light brown eyes became mesmerizing liquid pools. “I’m counting on it.”

Excerpt:

He parked, and they walked to the entrance. Autumn’s pace slowed considerably as they approached the gates. He paused to let her take in the magnificence of the entrance. “It’s impressive.”

She panned the area, taking it all in. “That’s a very large tiger statue.”

Darcy tugged at Malcolm’s arm.  “Let’s get our picture with it.” She thrust her camera at Autumn. “Will you take it?”

“Sure.” Autumn waited until they were positioned, and then she clicked several photos. Then she whirled, her hand shooting out to grab the wrist of a passerby. She twisted it, putting enough pressure near the base of the thumb to cause serious pain. The boy cried out, but she lacked mercy. She twisted harder. “You sincerely don’t want to do that. My boyfriend is a mercenary, and he’s not the forgiving type.”

David wasn’t sure what she was doing, but he knew he needed to intervene. Before he could say anything, the boy reached in his pocket and handed over a wallet—David’s wallet. Too wrapped up in Autumn, he’d let down his guard. He checked to make sure nothing was gone. “Thanks.”

Autumn eased the pressure on the boy’s wrist. “This isn’t the life you want. You should think about choosing another career.” She let go, and the boy disappeared into the crowd.

Malcolm and Darcy returned, and Autumn gave Darcy her phone back.

“What happened?” Malcolm asked.

“A pickpocket tried for my wallet, and Sugar caught him.”

A light blush stole up her cheeks, probably at his public use of the nickname. “Crowds make for easy targets. You have to watch out.”

Darcy looked impressed. “It’s a good thing you were watching. I’m not that observant.” She gestured toward the tiger statue. “Your turn.”

After handing his phone to Darcy, he slung his arm around Autumn’s waist and steered her toward the statue. “I’d love it if you didn’t call me a mercenary in public. It sends the wrong message.”

“Yeah, but ‘security specialist’ just makes you sound like a mall cop. Nothing against mall cops, but they’re not big, bad, and dangerous like you.”

Excerpt from Chapter One:

Laying my head back against the black leather seats of the Jag and gazing ahead, I lifted a finger and touched my lips that were swollen from his kiss. The weariness of the past few weeks was beginning to take over, weighing on my eyelids as they began to droop. I should have been reassured by the man sitting next to me.

I shifted in my seat so I could watch him as he drove on. He was a force that even nature had no hold over. There was an urge to reach out and cling to his broad bicep, a need to feel the security of his physical strength, aching somewhere deep inside of me.

We didn’t speak as he pressed all his weight onto the accelerator, urging the car until it was over the speed limit. I half expected the shine of blue lights to fill the inside of the car, with sirens blaring around us. But they didn’t. Of course they didn’t. Even if a marked car was to pass, I doubted Vance Ellery would slow down, and I had even less that the police would attempt to pull him over. I suspected that the personal phone number of every single high-ranking officer in the country, was tucked away in a neat Rolodex on Vance’s desk or even stored in the memory bank of his mobile phone for easy access.

The silence should have been soothing. I should have been able to let my lashes flutter against my cheeks, and slip into a relaxing slumber. Instead the lack of conversation added to the tension that built behind my eyes. I closed them, hoping that soon I would drift off into a deep sleep, where I would be surrounded by falling flowers, rainbows, and sunlight. Ha! If only I was deserving of such luck. There were no pleasant dreams awaiting me after the sandman visited. Only nightmares wanted to be part of my night. They tormented me, bringing memories that I’d tried to bury and forget. They hounded the darkness, giving me nothing but misery and pain and suffering. It was as though all my sins from a previous life had been rolled over into this one.

If the visions of his face, the sound of his voice had been the only elements of my slumber, then I might have been willing to slip away and let the desperation of rest take me to the shadowed places I dreaded. My soul was destined for torture though. I was to be punished for his crime.

The mere suggestion of sleep forced my blood to pulsate until it was the only thing I could hear, throbbing in my temples. The searing pain of anxiety and panic stabbed at my chest, pins pricking my skin, as I let my eyelids fall. A shudder fell down my spine, waking me from the light doze I’d stumbled into.

Breathe in, breathe out. In with the good, out with the bad. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Breathe in, breathe out. A mantra, taught to me by a yoga instructor years before hell had entered my life, repeated over and over in my mind. I inhaled the cool air through my nasal passages, allowing it to slip down into my pain-filled lungs, exhaling all the bad out of my mouth in a gigantic whoosh.

Ahead, the roads were empty, weaving out of the village and headed towards Richart Courts, the hotel that was to be my sanctuary for the next couple of days before I had to face the next challenge. New York City.

How anyone could expect me to go back there was beyond belief. The only logical explanation for their plans for my future was that facing New York was the lesser of the two evils that haunted me, threatening to rip away the seams that had begun to fray around my already tattered edges.

Four Letter Words is the second, and final, part to Paige’s story. To celebrate its re-release, the first part of the Words Duet has been reduced to 99p / 99c!
