KB Blitz: Spooning Daisy by Maggie McConnell

Spooning Daisy by Maggie McConnell

bbt_tourbanner_spooningdaisy

GENRE:   Contemporary romance (romantic comedy)

BLURB:

mediakit_bookcover_spooningdaisyHer mango chutney is exquisite; her blueberry sauce to die for. But Chef de Cuisine Daisy Moon is a woman without a kitchen after a “bit of trouble” at her last job. Now blacklisted from Seattle to San Francisco, Daisy’s sole job offer is from Wild Man Lodge in Otter Bite, Alaska, where the end of the road is just the beginning.

Excerpt:

Max cocked his head at her. No siree, Bob. Daisy Moon was not easy. She was like a 1500 piece puzzle, where all the pieces are really tiny, and similar in shape and color, but are nonetheless different, and it would take weeks, maybe even months, just to get the edges put together.

“Don’t look so surprised,” she said. “I know I’m not exactly laid back. Okay, maybe that’s being kind,” she responded to Max’s smile. “But I’m an incredible cook. And a really good speller. Not to mention having a humongous vocabulary. I came in fourth in the national spelling bee championship when I was fourteen.”

Without meaning to, Max pictured Daisy at fourteen, in a prim white blouse and a demure plaid skirt with her hair tied back in a ribbon, triumphantly spelling words like…concupiscence.

“Do I know what men want, or what?” Now Daisy smiled…at herself.

Taking the cue, Max leaned into her and spoke sincerely, but resisted the urge to cup her hand.

“Somewhere there is a man who wants a pretty redhead who’s difficult and a great cook with a really humongous vocabulary who can spell…and next time it won’t be a cross-dressing felon.”

KB Blitz: Wired Rogue by Toby Neal

Wired Rogue by Toby Neal

GENRE:  Mystery/Police Procedural

bbt_tourbanner_wiredrogue

BLURB:

‘Wired in’ to her computers, MMA-fighting tech agent Sophie Ang has been content in her clean, cool tech lab, where she chases criminals online, continuing a dance in the dark with the enigmatic vigilante known as the Ghost. Tumultuous changes from without and within eject her from her agency cocoon to the front lines, where she finds herself in partnership with a brilliant, overbearing, larger-than-life ex-Special Forces operative, Jake Dunn. They climb walls, dodge bullets, kidnap children and dig up bodies for a case that might cost her life—and has already taken her badge.

Excerpt:

mediakit_bookcover_wiredrogueSophie set the unconscious child on the ground and stripped off her pack, tossing it into the nearby water, black and slick as tar in the faint light of the moon. Their packs splashed and sank, bubbling, as she picked the girl back up and ran after Dunn’s already retreating form.

The dogs were gaining. Sophie could hear their barking as they headed back up the rugged goat track. They couldn’t follow on the quad on this rough ground with its rapid elevation, but it slowed her and Jake Dunn, too.

Sophie could hear the chopper directly overhead.

If she could just make it to the rendezvous point…

Her whole focus narrowed to the path in front of her, steep, rough with stones and protruding branches, rendered in shades of shallow green by the NV goggles. Her arms ached with the weight of the little girl, a solid sixty or seventy pounds. Her legs burned. Her breath tore through her lungs in hot, rending breaths that left the taste of blood at the back of her throat. But she was keeping up with Dunn. They were going to make it.

The dog caught her from behind by the pants, his teeth leaving a fiery pinch. Sophie fell with a cry, rolling desperately to the side so as not to land on the child.

The dog didn’t let go, dragging her by the leg, shaking her, growling—and he was big enough that she slid backward down the steep, rough path, letting go of the child. “Dunn!” She screamed.

Dunn appeared through the otherworldly green of the NV vision like a demon rising from hell, a knife in one fist and the tranq gun in the other. He kicked the Shepherd and caught it in the side, lifting it off Sophie with a yelp—just in time for the second dog to leap at him from the trail. Sophie scrambled to her feet, hefting the girl, and ran. She didn’t have time to see if Dunn was going to be okay—she had to get the child to safety.

KB Blitz: Bounty Song by Mandy Colton

Bounty’s Song by Mandy Colton

GENRE: Contemporary  Romance

mbb_tourbanner_bountyssong

BLURB:

Gage Knight is a Texas bounty hunter and just doing a tough job when he’s sent to Nashville to pick up a grifting high-dollar fugitive. He arrives at the right place at almost the right time, but he makes a big mistake when he leaves.

Once a debutante, Danica Chastain is now a struggling songwriter with a dream of landing a job in the music business. On the day when her hard work seems to be heading in the right direction, a gruff man with a dark presence and wolfish eyes arrives at her door.

Although their immediate chemistry is off the charts, the two clash—for good reason. Danica is not who he thinks she is, and he’s not listening…

Excerpt:

mediakit_bookcover_bountyssong“Open the damn door, Gage, or I’m walking in whether you are flagrante delicto or not!”

Groaning, he rolled out of bed, holding his aching head, shuffled to the door, and wrenched it open. “What the hell, Cheryl? And speak English!”

She snickered, reaching up and stuck her pointer finger to the tip of his nose. “Right back atcha, big boy. You’re gettin’ the Tara Morgan file back. Get it together, and get your primo ass moving.” She wrinkled her nose and backed up a step, waving her hand. “Dude, you are ripe. Are you drunk?”

“Yes! And I would like to sleep it off in peace. I just delivered Morgan.”

“No. You delivered one Danica Chastain, and the boss ain’t happy. You would not believe the God-awful twist he’s got his boxers in over this one. He’s embarrassed, all kinds of pissed, and was holding a nut cracker in one hand when I left. You know what that means.”

Fuck. The woman had been telling the truth. “I have no idea where to find the real Tara Morgan. She evidently left Nashville before I picked up the Chastain girl. Their IDs must have been switched.”

“Gage, this kind of shoddy work is not like you. What the hell happened?”

He ran his hand through his hair, and it hurt. “Where is she? Danica?”

“Dad compensated her, which will come out of your next check, and bought her a bus ticket back to Nashville.”

Shit! He should be taking her home. He owed her that much, and he needed to talk to her. He wanted to…

“Gage?” She snapped her fingers in his face. “Gage!”

“Will you stop yelling, girly? My head is already pounding like a bass drum and ready to explode.”

Cheryl was just staring at him now with her head cocked. “How come you got drunk?”

He ignored her.

She pulled a wry grin. “I saw that girl… She was pretty. You sweet on her? Huh? Is that what happened? She get under your skin and twist your gonads all up into a love knot?”

This girl and the boss both had an obsession with balls. The wile little snippet of a girl swung a set of truck nuts off the front of her little Jeep. Big black ones. Gage just stared at her a minute and continued his shuffle to the medicine cabinet for some aspirin.

Cheryl followed, hot on his heels. “Oh my freakin’ gawd, I’m right. A woman finally got to you. Gage, the eternal bachelor. Did you do the taboo and pork a skip?”

He stopped and turned. Cheryl was Gavin’s daughter, a professional meddler. Gavin was one of his bosses, a bail bondsman. He worked for a couple of guys who kept him plenty busy. Cheryl just happened to be the go-to girl if you needed information. She could find a third of their skips just through her own contact mill. Everybody liked her, including cops, lawyers, judges, and even some political types. She knew somebody in every neighborhood and precinct in Houston and then a bunch of key people across the state. Shit. Across at least three states. A perpetual-talking, networking, goldmine she was. Friendly as hell, instantly likable, cute as a button with her short-spiky hair like his own, and a cute little pixie face. She was the closest thing to an annoying little sister he’d ever had and currently working up to being a pain in his ass today.

“Girl, will you please stop talkin’. I need to take an aspirin and a piss,” he grumbled.

She leaned against the doorframe, shit-grinning from ear to ear. “I don’t mind. It’s been a while since I saw it. If you’re too weak this mornin’, I could hold it for ya.”

He shook his head and shut the door. Little shit.

He had just started to trickle when Cheryl started talking again through the door and his stream halted. “You know, chances are, that Morgan girl didn’t go far. We got lucky findin’ her in Tennessee, and I don’t think she ever planned to stay long. I think she was just unloading stolen goods and holing up for a while. She likes casinos but not the boats so much that are around there. They’re mainly hangouts for the senior citizens and tourist crowd. Only good for a little pickpocket action. Not her usual gig. She mostly hangs out where she can latch on to somebody, likes the horse and dog tracks. The big question is, which way did she go? I already marked the tracks around Nashville on a map for you. Kentucky, Florida, Louisiana, or Texas, baby. I think the last two. I betcha dollars ta donuts, she didn’t go to Louisville and is probably in Bossier City, Louisiana, right now. More racetracks comin’ back this way toward Texas.”

Gage washed his hands while looking in the mirror. Man, he looked like shit. After downing two aspirin, he opened the door and headed to the kitchen to put some coffee on. Again, with Cheryl following close behind.

“Dad gave me another file. Said to pick this guy up before you leave. He said some other stuff too, but I…uh…don’t need to repeat the rest.”

No doubt. “Your dad is not the only guy I work for. I gotta check in with Tanner too.”

“News travels fast. Tanner called to rub in your mistake just before Dad said all that other stuff I didn’t repeat.” She then quipped, “What you gotta do is fix this Morgan thing. Dad’ll be really pissed at you if this bond runs out and he takes a really embarrassing double hit. He’s out a groveling apology, a chunk of spare change, bus ticket, and some reputation skin off his ass. And you’re out plenty of dough too, aren’t ya?”

He closed his eyes and rolled his neck to get the kinks out. He could give a fuck less about the money. What he needed to do was fix his wrong with Danica. He loaded the coffee pot and flicked it on, then headed to the shower with Cheryl chattering right behind.

“I gotta go. I’ll put the files on the table along with the map I marked. I’ll even call security at the race tracks in Bossier City and Vinton and ask about any reports of theft.”

He turned and kissed her on the cheek. “Appreciate it.”

She smiled and gave him a wink. “I do what I can. After you find that Morgan chick, you can go do your own groveling to that Danica girl.”

“Good-bye, Cheryl. Unless you want to shower with me?” He ended with a mischievous grin.

“Yikes! With you and that big snake? I’m outta here, pal.” She said as she went, throwing an eyebrow waggle back at him, “You’re pretty hot and all, but I don’t think Dad would appreciate me boinkin’ the help. I could hurt ya.”

Kissing Bandits Blitz: Janice Seagraves

Thank you for having on your blog today.

rb4ucowboy-pre-orderadIn my cowboy anthology story, Max has had a crush on Linda since high school. At a barbecue Linda is tired of waiting for Max to make the first move.

Excerpt:
“Max. I’ve been looking for you.” Linda took his hand, and an electrical sensation flowed up his arm. “Let’s step over here.”
“But I…”
“Only for a couple minutes. Your sisters can spare you that long.” She dragged him away to the Galloway’s backyard. The tall fence blocked off some of the noise from the party, giving them the illusion of privacy.
She pressed him against the fence and kissed him, hard. Surprise had him opening his mouth, but it also gave her entrance. Her tongue skimmed across his, and he was lost. He invaded her mouth, pursuing her. His placed his arms around her and pulled her against him, flattening her breasts against his chest. Desire spiraled through him.
She slowly pulled back and snuggled against his chest. “Wow. I always wondered what kissing you would be like.”
Rubbing her back, he noticed a little black bird in the tree limb above them. He whistled, and it cocked its head. He continued to mimic bird song, until the starling flew down and perched on his extended finger.
“How did you do that?” whispered Linda.
“It must be used to humans,” he lied. “Did you know starlings are better mimics then mocking birds?”
“No, I didn’t.” She smiled.
“What do you think of Linda?” he asked the bird. Forming what he wanted the starling to do in his mind.
It did a wolf whistle. Linda giggled.

My Greek SEAL by Sabrina Devonshire

BBT_TourBanner_MyGreekSEAL

GENRE: Military romance

BLURB:

After a sudden job lay off, Maya holes up in her apartment, drinking wine and eating ice cream until the day she’s slated to leave for Greece. Even though she’s lost enthusiasm for this Greek island swimming vacation, she’s paid for the trip so she boards the plane.

She figures her life can’t possibly get any worse. She’s unemployed and spent most of her savings hiring a lawyer to collect commissions her corrupt boss refused to pay. She stumbles down to the Lefkada Island dock the first morning jetlagged and grumpy. When she spots a Greek man with a drool-worthy body, her plan is to look casual. Instead, she trips and plunges straight into the water. It wouldn’t be so bad if she never had to see him again. But Eros, a former Hellenic Navy SEAL, is one of her swimming tour companions. He boards the boat, pokes fun at her American mannerisms and asks way too many irritating questions. And he’s so damn hot, he makes her feel confused and distracted all the time. To make matters worse, he’s assigned to be one of her swimming partners.

Maybe Maya could have ignored the simmering attraction between them if it weren’t for the earthquake, the tidal wave and being stranded alone with him on Kalamos Island.

Excerpt:

MediaKit_BookCover_MyGreekSEALWhere are all these crazy random thoughts coming from? My mind isn’t usually this disordered. Right now it feels more turbulent than the open sea we’re about to venture into. My stomach lurches at the thought. I wonder if maybe I should have taken an extra motion sickness pill just in case the prescribed amount isn’t enough for me. Stop. Get your head together. This too handsome man is wreaking havoc on my equilibrium. I nearly laugh out loud at the stupidity of that ridiculous thought. What equilibrium? I’ve already demonstrated my shit sense of balance to everyone on this boat and soon they’ll know I’m mentally unbalanced as well.

“I believe we’re all here now,” says Libby. She disappears into the cabin to start taking a head count and ends the counting by touching me on the head. “Thirteen’s the lot. Very good.”

Thirteen swimmers on the boat and I’ve just been dubbed the unlucky thirteenth. I try to discard thoughts of bad luck colored by images of sinking boats and muscle cramps. Normally, I’m slightly superstitious. But now I’m feeling downright neurotic. I’m completely annoyed with my predicament. I was as stable as any other person until the shit with my job hit the fan and I flew to Greece. Now, I’ve seen one hot guy, been given a random unlucky number and suddenly have the thought processes of a crazy lunatic.

Forget unlucky thirteen. Now he’s walking toward me. I clear my throat and cough. Damn. My mouth feels dry, but my water bottle is in the bottom of my bag. I won’t allow my mouth to fall open as I watch his large, tanned feet take several athletic steps until he’s standing right in front of me. Okay, so here we are. I’ll utter one or two stupid things right away so I can get the worst of the embarrassment over with right off the bat.

What I really need right now is a shot of tequila.

Kissing Bandits Blitz: The Congressman’s Wife by Charlene Keel

The Congressman’s Wife by Charlene Keel

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

MBB_TourBanner_TheCongressmansWife

BLURB:

All Eden Bancroft has ever been to her high-profile politician husband is a trophy wife, born and bred for the part. She believes she has no choice but to play it—until she meets a talented chef and restaurant heir who makes her feel loved for herself alone. The more her husband uses and belittles her, the more deeply Eden falls for Kaleb. Even with Mitchell’s congressional campaign in full swing, the lovers manage to find brief stolen moments together. When her husband is wounded by a bullet from a disgruntled lobbyist, Eden must stay by his side. What she learns can set her free, if she has the courage to take a stand.

Excerpt: Love at First Sight

This was an important night and Eden was at her best.  Her makeup was flawless and she’d pulled her honey-blonde hair up, letting it cascade down her back in a waterfall of curls. Her Norma Kamali gown, a dark emerald green that made her eyes sparkle, clung to her body and defined every curve.

Mitchell took her elbow and steered her towards the entrance to the ballroom, and the photographers followed them inside.  They had missed cocktails, partly because Mitchell wanted them to make an entrance, but mostly because he didn’t want her to have access to freely flowing liquor so soon after they’d had a fight.  The row they’d had earlier had been a big one.

MediaKit_BookCover_TheCongressmansWifeHe didn’t like it when she told him he was getting ahead of himself.  As soon as he’d decided to run for congress, he’d started spending, running up the balance on their credit cards.  There was no guarantee he’d win, she’d argued, even though he was well known on the political scene.  His family had owned a few dozen acres in this part of Long Island for over a hundred years, and his father had been a state Supreme Court judge.  Mitchell was convinced that, along with his mayoral record, it was enough to guarantee him a seat in congress.

The fight tonight had started when she’d reminded him that if the dinner didn’t go well, his campaign would be over before it got started.  This was their first formal fundraiser.  At five hundred dollars a plate, she was worried they wouldn’t meet their goal.

Their argument had been pointless—like most of them.  When he had his mind set on something, Mitchell didn’t want to hear that his scheme of the moment was imperfect, and he especially didn’t like being told it wasn’t smart to spend money they didn’t have.  They both had ample designer wardrobes, but he had insisted on the expensive gown for Eden and a new tuxedo for himself.  The limo had been his campaign manager’s idea and she thought it ridiculous.  Mitchell, however, had been delighted.

All she had been able to think of as she got dressed was that their credit cards were almost maxed out—again.  Whether he won the election or not, she would have to get a second job if she didn’t want him to ask his mother to pay them down—again.  His law practice, which could have been successful if he would stay focused on it, was suffering because of all the time he was putting into the campaign.

Mitchell didn’t cope well with any kind of disappointment and if tonight was a washout, he would be impossible.  She was so tired of taking care of him, doing everything for him, especially the constant, incessant ego stroking he required.

As they walked into the Ocean Club, appreciative murmurs swept through the crowd—most of the comments she’d heard before.  Mitchell and Eden Bancroft were the glamorous, golden couple—beautiful, bright, young, sophisticated and well-connected pillars of the community.  Suddenly, a new insight dawned on her.

Except for his height Mitchell was completely unremarkable.  Having her at his side transformed him into a mysterious, even sexy man.  To look as ordinary as he did and still get a woman like Eden made him sexy.  This unexpected epiphany delighted her.  Laughter bubbled up in her throat as she flashed her million-dollar smile.

That’s when Kaleb saw her.  He had gone out to the dining room to consult with the maître d’ and as he started back to the kitchen, he heard the full, rich sound of her laughter.  He’d turned to see where it was coming from and at that moment, for him, time stopped.  It was as if every moving part of the universe froze in a weird kind of suspended animation.  For a moment he could hardly breathe.  He couldn’t take his eyes off her.

She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.  Her dress was emerald green, slightly darker than her eyes, and her just-right tan accented her soft, blonde hair.  It looked soft anyway, and her skin looked dewy and inviting.  Kaleb stared at her in awe.  Doris, a waitress who had worked all day at her regular job and was doing the gig tonight to pick up a few extra bucks, followed his gaze to the amazing woman.

“Good choice, kid,” she said, heading into to the kitchen.  “She’s hot.”

ET_GriffMontgomeryQuarterback_Banner copy

EXCERPT:

Griff was struck dumb. He moved aside to let Marnie pass. Pieces started to fit together. The spoon. The nightmare. How does Bob fit into this? Anger at being lied to stoked his fire. He was determined to get at the truth.

At the front door, he stood by to let the women leave. Lauren was in the living room, cleaning up the coffee cups and cake plates. Griff leaned against the wall.

She turned as if she felt him standing there. “Hi. You’re home early.”

“Yeah. Just in time to see your book club leave. Seems like you meet often. For a book club, that is.”

Lauren avoided his stare. “Well, sometimes a new book—”

“Stop lying, Lauren. I know it’s not a book club. What the hell is going on?”

“Nothing that concerns you.” She turned away from him.

Griff gripped her upper arm, hard. “I disagree. We’re gonna talk. The truth. Now.” He sat her down in a chair in the kitchen while he retrieved a beer.

“I don’t see where you—”

“Last night gives me the right to know the truth. Talk.” He offered her a beer, too, which she accepted.

“Okay, okay.”

He straddled another chair, put his bottle to his lips, and eyed her. “Start talking.”

She squirmed a bit, cast her gaze at the floor, and cleared her throat.

“At me. Look at me,” he said, motioning with his fingers.

“All right…”

Kissing Bandits Blitz: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

Kissing Bandits Presents: All In by Simona Ahrnstedt

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BBT_AllIn_Banner copyBLURB: In the cutthroat world of Sweden’s financial elite, no one knows that better than corporate raider David Hammar. Ruthless. Notorious. Unstoppable. He’s out to hijack the ultimate prize, Investum. After years of planning, all the players are in place; he needs just one member of the aristocratic owning family on his side—Natalia De la Grip.

Elegant, brilliant, driven to succeed in a man’s world, Natalia is curious about David’s unexpected invitation to lunch. Everyone knows that he is rich, dangerous, unethical; she soon discovers he is also deeply scarred.

The attraction between these two is impossible, but the long Swedish nights unfold an affair that will bring to light shocking secrets, forever alter a family, and force both Natalia and David to confront their innermost fears and desires.

Excerpt Three:

MediaKit_BookCover_AllIn“I don’t usually discuss my, uh, private interests with men.” She closed her eyes. “I can’t believe I’m considering telling you this, but I collect French underwear. I buy it online. It’s very expensive and completely irrational. Most of it isn’t even wearable.”

She opened her eyes.

David was studying her intently. “Tell me more things that make you blush. You’re very attractive, in a non-corporate-finance way, when you’re blushing.”

Natalia shook her head. She reached for the thermos as an excuse to avoid looking at him. “I think that’s enough of a revelation for tonight,” she said. “Your turn.”

“Hmm, what do you want to know?”

Natalia cocked her head, and they looked at each other over the remains of their picnic. Oh, there was a lot she wanted to know. Why had he asked her out? What wasn’t he telling her about his past?

What was that coldness she glimpsed in him sometimes all about? And most of all, of course: did he think they would be having sex with each other in the near future?

“What would you have done if you didn’t do what you do now?” she asked instead.

“I think I’d sail around the world. Give up the Internet, read books.” He laughed. “Maybe learn to cook.”

“You can’t cook?”

“Can you?” he dared her.

“I opened a jar of pickles the other day. Does that count?”

His eyes twinkled. “I don’t think so.”

“What did you do during your military service?” she asked. “I have two brothers, but you know, strangely enough, I’ve never asked them.”

“Romp around outdoors, get chewed out, work like a dog,” he said. “But I actually liked it. We followed orders, got a lot of exercise, slept well at night.” He fell silent.

She listened to the waves lapping. She heard a dog barking somewhere onshore.

He turned to her, raised himself up on his elbows. “Are you still cold?” he asked. “Should I go get a blanket?”

Natalia slowly shook her head.

David looked into her eyes. He reached out his hand and she held her breath. He grazed her pearl necklace with his fingers and she blinked. He fingered the heavy clasp, which had slid to the front.

“What kind of pattern is this?” he asked.

She swallowed, trying to sound casual despite his fingers brushing over the base of her throat. A finger caressed her collarbone, almost absentmindedly. “The family crest,” she said, her pulse racing under his fingertips. “My brothers each wear it on their signet rings. I wear it on the clasp of my necklace.”

“Because you have a title? You’re a countess?”

“Yes.”

She couldn’t interpret the expression on his face. He was staring at the heavy gold clasp as if it meant something. Then he looked at her again, without taking his hand away. He leaned forward but stopped. And Natalia surprised herself. She moved her own hand behind his head, impatient and bold. They came together over the remains of their picnic, and he kissed her lightly, no more than a flutter over her lips. He lingered a second or two, warm and a little rough.

Natalia tried to think clearly, but felt only desire. There was no, no reason not to do this. It was as if she’d been waiting her whole life for this, she thought, to be kissed on an ostentatious yacht in the middle of the archipelago by David Hammar, who tasted like tiramisu.

Out Now! Grand Slam – BDSM Sports Romance by Lily Harlem & Lucy Felthouse (@lily_harlem @cw1985)

Everyone’s favourite dominant tennis player, Travis Connolly, is back! Blurb:

grandslamCalifornia had seduced me with promises of a new life working at Los Carlos Tennis Academy. What I didn’t expect was the dark, brooding number one seed, Travis Connolly, resisting my help. He wasn’t interested in my psychology skills. Instead his attention was drawn to the edgy, sharper corners of my desires, proving that they existed, setting me challenges and driving me crazy to the point of combustion.

I’m the best tennis player in the world—officially—so why would I need a damn woman full of psychobabble to get me on form? Despite my irritation, however, I can’t resist pushing Marie Sherratt’s buttons even though doing that shows her the darkest shades of my lust, the parts of me I buried deep. So I set her a challenge, one she rises to, one that has me rising too, and before long my game relies on her calling the shots, hitting the target and bending to my will. One thing was certain, being not just master of the court, but also of Marie is seriously good for my soul.

Excerpt:

I turned to the door. I always kept it ajar when expecting a client, to give the impression that I was open to whatever they needed to talk about. It was a subliminal thing.

Travis stood in the frame, his wide shoulders filling the space, the top of his head almost brushing the wood and his jawline holding a heavy sprinkle of black stubble.

Fuck, he should come with a warning. Hazard to the health of every female heart. He looked good enough to eat, or lick all over at the very least. Tasty.

“Knock, knock,” he said, slipping his gaze down my body.

“Come in. Take a seat.” I gestured to the couch and made a point of not letting my attention slide over his body. I didn’t need to look at soft blue jeans worn in all the right places or at his black polo top with a Nike logo just over his right nipple to imagine what was beneath them. I took a deep breath to stop myself doing just that. His physical attributes weren’t my concern, it was his mind I was after.

He shut the door and sat sideways on the low S curve of the black leather recliner, his long legs folding over and his knees coming up high.

“Please,” I said. “Lie back, make yourself comfortable.” I took a seat on a soft chair just to his left and crossed my legs.

Damn, I hadn’t realized how short this tight little red skirt was. Quickly I uncrossed, then started to worry there was a gap between my knees that would flash the top of my stockings or worse, what was between them. Hurriedly I pressed my notebook over my lap, resisted a squirm and forced a gentle smile at Travis.

“You wear glasses,” he said.

“Contacts usually.” I touched the black frames and pressed them up the bridge of my nose a fraction.

“You were in a hurry this morning then?” He frowned, as though irritated by me being in a hurry.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“You were in a rush to get to work?”

“Not especially, it’s just the heat and being tired, it’s made my eyes a little sensitive. I thought it best to opt for my glasses when I left home this morning.”

“So you slept at home last night?”

“Pardon?” I creased my brow in confusion.

His fists were clenched and a muscle twitched in his jawline. “You slept at home then and not at…?”

I struggled to keep the surprise out of my expression. Bloody hell, was he getting at what I thought he was? Did he want to know if I’d slept at Peter’s?

His dark eyes were boring into me; they were deep chocolate-brown, almost black. Annoyance swirled in their depths, so did a curious certainty that I’d answer his question. He was definitely a man who was used to getting what he wanted.

Well, I supposed he would again now, because if he didn’t chill out we’d get nowhere and I had things to start work on. Plus I hadn’t slept with Peter. I wasn’t a to-bed-on-the-first-date kind of woman, so what was the harm in being truthful? “Yes, I slept at home last night.” I opened my notepad, clicked the spring on my ball-point pen and tilted my chin. “Alone.” I caught his steady gaze. Yes, I’d told him something he had no right to wonder about. But by telling Travis what he appeared to want to know, he owed me something in the confessing stakes.

He nodded slowly, then lifted his legs and did as I’d asked, lay back on the chair and settled his gaze over the L.A. skyline.

“And what about you?” I asked, watching as he unfurled his fists and rested his hands over his flat belly. “Did you sleep alone?”

He frowned. “You know I did.”

“No I don’t.”

“I was eating alone, Marie. You saw me.”

“Yes. I did. But you could have been heading out to meet someone or catching up with other players. I’m not a mind-reader.”

I waited for him to elaborate on our chance encounter or offer some information on the rest of his evening. He didn’t.

“In these sessions, Travis, it’s important for me to know who else is in your life, who you hang out with, who you share your thoughts and feelings with.”

“You have everything you need to know in my file.”

“Your file is full of facts. I’m more interested in the non-tangible things.”

“Like what?”

“Things like who your special someone is.”

He sucked in a breath, rolled his lips in on themselves and stared out the window.

“Have you left someone you care about back in England?” I asked gently.

“I think this is all very much beyond the realms of what we’re supposed to be doing here.” He’d fisted his fingers again and shifted his right foot irritably, as though kicking something away. I wondered if he was imagining it was my head.

“It’s up to us to decide what we want to do with our time together, Travis. We can talk about your accident or cognitive methods for keeping calm and focused under pressure, or you can unload all the stuff that fills your mind and stops you from being able to concentrate on court. Entirely up to you.”

“Great, in that case we won’t discuss my love life. It really is the last thing that plays on my mind when I’m beating an opponent into submission.”

Okay, now was the time to play my trump card. “Yet you feel it necessary to ask me about my love life.”

“You didn’t have to answer.”

“No, I didn’t, but you wanted to know, and since we’re stuck with each other for three hours a week for the foreseeable future I figured it would make sense for us to know a little about each other’s lives.”

“So now we do. I know you’re dating my coach and he wants to get into your knickers, and you know I sleep alone and have done for a long time now.” He paused. “Too long.”

Great, now we were getting somewhere. “And would you like that to change?”

“What?”

“Sleeping alone.”

He sighed and shoved his hand through his hair. I watched the black strands feather through his fingers and an image of myself doing that to him as he kissed down my sternum, onto my stomach, lower, suddenly stole into my mind.

I tightened my legs together. Felt a pleasurable little rush of heat in my lower abdomen. No. That was a ridiculous thing to daydream about. Travis Connolly was not only way out of my league, he was also a surly grump. Sitting here talking to him was stretching seconds into minutes.

“Are you asking me if I want to get married?” he asked, his gaze slipping to my chest.

Damn it, my nipples were tingling now.

“No, not at all. Simply wondering if you feel your career allows you to have a romantic relationship or if it’s something you’ve sacrificed in the name of tennis.”

“I’ve sacrificed lots of things to be number one seed.”

Excerpt from Chapter One:

Laying my head back against the black leather seats of the Jag and gazing ahead, I lifted a finger and touched my lips that were swollen from his kiss. The weariness of the past few weeks was beginning to take over, weighing on my eyelids as they began to droop. I should have been reassured by the man sitting next to me.

I shifted in my seat so I could watch him as he drove on. He was a force that even nature had no hold over. There was an urge to reach out and cling to his broad bicep, a need to feel the security of his physical strength, aching somewhere deep inside of me.

We didn’t speak as he pressed all his weight onto the accelerator, urging the car until it was over the speed limit. I half expected the shine of blue lights to fill the inside of the car, with sirens blaring around us. But they didn’t. Of course they didn’t. Even if a marked car was to pass, I doubted Vance Ellery would slow down, and I had even less that the police would attempt to pull him over. I suspected that the personal phone number of every single high-ranking officer in the country, was tucked away in a neat Rolodex on Vance’s desk or even stored in the memory bank of his mobile phone for easy access.

The silence should have been soothing. I should have been able to let my lashes flutter against my cheeks, and slip into a relaxing slumber. Instead the lack of conversation added to the tension that built behind my eyes. I closed them, hoping that soon I would drift off into a deep sleep, where I would be surrounded by falling flowers, rainbows, and sunlight. Ha! If only I was deserving of such luck. There were no pleasant dreams awaiting me after the sandman visited. Only nightmares wanted to be part of my night. They tormented me, bringing memories that I’d tried to bury and forget. They hounded the darkness, giving me nothing but misery and pain and suffering. It was as though all my sins from a previous life had been rolled over into this one.

If the visions of his face, the sound of his voice had been the only elements of my slumber, then I might have been willing to slip away and let the desperation of rest take me to the shadowed places I dreaded. My soul was destined for torture though. I was to be punished for his crime.

The mere suggestion of sleep forced my blood to pulsate until it was the only thing I could hear, throbbing in my temples. The searing pain of anxiety and panic stabbed at my chest, pins pricking my skin, as I let my eyelids fall. A shudder fell down my spine, waking me from the light doze I’d stumbled into.

Breathe in, breathe out. In with the good, out with the bad. In through the nose, out through the mouth. Breathe in, breathe out. A mantra, taught to me by a yoga instructor years before hell had entered my life, repeated over and over in my mind. I inhaled the cool air through my nasal passages, allowing it to slip down into my pain-filled lungs, exhaling all the bad out of my mouth in a gigantic whoosh.

Ahead, the roads were empty, weaving out of the village and headed towards Richart Courts, the hotel that was to be my sanctuary for the next couple of days before I had to face the next challenge. New York City.

How anyone could expect me to go back there was beyond belief. The only logical explanation for their plans for my future was that facing New York was the lesser of the two evils that haunted me, threatening to rip away the seams that had begun to fray around my already tattered edges.

Four Letter Words is the second, and final, part to Paige’s story. To celebrate its re-release, the first part of the Words Duet has been reduced to 99p / 99c!
