Bond Between Sisters #TreasureMe

treasure-me1045-500Sisters can be the greatest friends or the worst enemies. In Treasure Me, Autumn’s closest friend is her sister, Jessica. Raised into a life on the run as thieves and con-artists, both girls have a ton of baggage. Through it all, they looked to each other for friendship, love, and support. In Re/Leased, Jessica (who went by Summer back then,) was in a coma. Autumn’s life revolved around making sure her sister had the care she needed to stay alive.

Now that Jessica is awake and dealing with the aftereffects of the medical trauma and finding out that the man who raised her was, in fact, her kidnapper and not her father, she and Autumn clash. However no matter the disagreement, nothing will ever separate these sisters.

This relationship is probably one of the dearest to me that I’ve ever written. I have two sisters, and we are not that close, mostly due to the fact that they are so much younger than me. Even now that we’re older, we haven’t developed that closeness. However I had a cousin who was like a sister to me. She was three months older, and we were best buddies from birth. No matter who came into or went out of our lives, we knew we would always be there for each other. I loved her like she was part of me. She passed away fourteen years ago, and not a day goes by that I don’t mourn her loss.

I see our relationship in the closeness between my daughters, twins who are night and day in their personalities and looks—just like my cousin and I were. When I write Autumn/Brea and Jessica, I look to those relationships to guide how they act and react with each other. In some ways, writing scenes with Jessica and Brea/Autumn are one way I revisit my memories of my cousin.

When you read Treasure Me, I hope you enjoy the bond between these sisters, and that it brings you the joy it brings to me.

Songs and Chapter Titles for Treasure Me

treasure-me1045-500One new thing I did for Treasure Me was that I didn’t number the chapters. Instead I gave them each a title. For the most part, the titles describe what’s going on in the chapter. There are a couple that I really like, though, and that’s what I’m going to talk about today.

Crepuscular Rays—My daughter taught me this word—she’s a weather buff—and I thought it was so cool that I made it a point to work it into the book. Crepuscular rays are the phenomenon that happens when the sun shines through a cloud and you can see the shaft of light extend all the way to the ground. The spotlight almost seems otherworldly. They’re a rare and beautiful natural event, and I felt it perfectly captured the mood of the scene.

Frayed Knot—This is the punchline of my favorite joke. Anyone who knows me knows that I suck at telling jokes. I’m great with one-liners or zingers, but I can’t pull off an entire joke to save my life. And I’m a great lover of puns. Anyway the joke is about a rope that walks into a bar and can’t get service. [I’m not going to take you the rest of the way through the joke because, as I said, I suck at telling jokes.]

At one point, David turns on the radio and starts singing a Janet Jackson song. While I mostly listen to alternative music, I confess to being a Janet fan—or Ms. Jackson because I’m a nasty woman. The reason I chose to make Autumn a Janet fan had more to do with my annoyance at the “dab” phenomenon sweeping the middle school crowd. Every time I see a kid do that move, I show them a clip from Escapade where Ms. Jackson does that move as part of her dance. That’s not the only video where you’ll find it. I think Paula Abdul loved that move a lot and put it in several videos.

If you’re looking for songs to go with Treasure Me, Miss you Much by Janet Jackson and Full of Grace by Sarah MacLaughlan are a great place to start.

Research for Treasure Me #MZurloAuthor

treasure-me1045-500In addition to looking up local Missouri legends for Treasure Me, I found myself researching many other aspects as well.

  1. Autumn drives past a parking structure with huge book spines painted on the outside of the building. That’s a real feature of the parking garage for the downtown branch of the Kansas City public library.
  2. Wife is originally from KC. She took us to visit the city a couple summers ago, and that’s when I got to see the amazing architecture, beautiful graffiti, stunning fountains, and unexpected statues. I tried to weave as much of that as possible into Treasure Me. Also Wife is my editor, so she made sure I paid proper homage to her hometown.
  3. The safes described in Treasure Me all exist. In my research, I found some gorgeous safes designed for display. Those are not actually secure because you’re advertising the location of your variables. The real security of a safe is that you have it hidden from view, and so you’ll find Autumn/Brea mooning over safes that look plain on the outside.
  4. Even though my father is a car guy, I know next to nothing about cars, especially high-end automobiles. All the cars mentioned in Treasure Me (one of the villains owns dealerships,) exist and are more expensive than a car has a right to be.

So that’s a little bit about the research that went into Treasure Me.

The Legends of Treasure Me #MZurloAuthor

treasure-me1045-500One of my beta readers was amazed by the creativity of the treasure stories I used in Treasure Me. The legend of this treasure drew Autumn into a tangled web and cost the lives of several characters—and that’s before she even knew there was a treasure.

I cannot take credit for the legends I used. When Autumn researches local legends that might fit the map she finds, she stumbles narrows her search to two specific ideas. One centers around missing Spanish gold, and the other features an outlaw that preyed upon people during the Civil War. These ideas were not mine. They are, in fact, actual Missouri legends.

Not being from Missouri, I didn’t spend 4th grade learning about their history. (Not sure I can claim to know that much about Michigan legends either.) I guess I assumed that area went from being under French control directly to the US during the Louisiana Purchase. However it turns out the area spent time under Spain’s control. Even then I didn’t consider that gold would be found anywhere in the state, but it turns out I was wrong there as well. Missouri has many legends about hidden gold mines.

The second legend I used originated with a gang of nasty outlaws who robbed, harassed, and murdered people during the Civil War while most of the menfolk were back east fighting on both sides. Alf Bolin was such a bad hombre that the government eventually sent the military to trap and kill him. Legends say that he hid most of this booty in the Ozarks.

In Treasure Me, Autumn has to decide which is the likely legend so that she can try to recover the treasure. Of course, things never turn out quite like she plans.

R Excerpt/Autumn:

“Autumn.” He infused the warning with his Dom Voice, and it sent shivers of desire straight to my core.

“Oh, Sir. I’m already on my knees.” Picking a lock. I left that part off because he knew exactly what I was doing. It took a lot of effort, but I concentrated on the soft metallic sounds of the tumblers locking into place.

“If I was there right now, I’d spank you for being a smartass.”

Oh, but that man knew exactly what to say to make my pussy wet. As a sometimes-SAM, I needed to run off at the mouth while he put me in my place. When the stress of life got to me, I would call him names and goad him as he spanked or flogged me. He’d send me to a place past all my inhibitions where it was safe for me to break down and let it all out.

“Are you in my office yet?”

The last tumbler set, and I opened his door. “I’m closing your door right now. Do you want me in your chair or on the couch?”

He groaned, and I knew I had successfully distracted him from his original purpose. “Take off all your clothes and bend over my desk with your legs spread. Move my chair out of the way. That’s where I want you.”

This was even better. I preferred to have him in control, and he was letting me get away with entirely too much right now. I set to work wrestling out of the cute green dress he’d surprised me with last weekend. He liked me to wear colors that matched my green eyes, and I found myself choosing clothing and accessories with his tastes in mind.

As if he read my mind, he cleared his throat. “I’m going to punish you when I get home, Sugar. You know better than to try to manipulate me.”

“Sir, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t at least try, and then you would fall out of love with me.” Yeah, my convoluted logic was one of the things he found attractive. Or so I hoped.

He laughed, the sexy vocal caress washing over my nerves and urging them into submission. “Perish the thought. Are you in position?”

I bent over and rested my bare chest on his cold desk. “Yes, Sir. My nipples are hard, and my pussy is wet. Are you naked also?”

Enjoy this PG excerpt…

Dean greeted us at the top of the private staircase that connected the third and fourth floors. After our workout, I really wanted to take the elevator, but Frankie did not present that as an option, and I was afraid I’d lose any street cred I’d gained if I asked.

“Good workout?”

Frankie laughed. She had a husky, deep-throated laugh that always sounded genuine. “Not bad. I can still kick your ass later if you want.”

By sheer willpower, I made it up the last step. “She taught me how to get out from under someone who is sitting on my torso and choking me.”

Dean scratched his chin, and I saw a cut I hadn’t noticed before. “Did you know she’s trained in six different fighting disciplines? If she ever decides to become an MMA fighter, I’m betting on her.”

“I’d run the bets because the house always cleans up.” I grabbed his hand, halting the damage he was doing to his cut. “Let me put some antibiotic on that.”

Frankie rolled her eyes. “You should see the other guys.”

I didn’t know they’d been in a fight. I looked Frankie up and down, but I didn’t see a sign of injury. “What happened?”

“As our client feared, thieves attempted to steal the item while we were in transit. They were highly organized and skilled fighters. Six of them hit us while we were loading. Five of them are in the hospital.” With her trademark smile, she glided down the hall and disappeared around the corner.

I led Dean to his office where I knew he kept first-aid supplies. “What happened to the sixth person?”

“He gave up fighting after Frankie introduced his balls to his spine. I’ve never heard a human being make a sound that high in pitch.” He chuckled and sat on the guest chair facing the other side of his desk while I retrieved the first-aid kit from a shelf.

That’s when I noticed his new safe. It was beautiful, a plain, metallic gray strongbox that sat next to another safe. That one, which always sat out on his shelf, was a work of hand-crafted art. However, the new one caught my interest, and I breathed an exclamation. “Oh, Dean.”

“You’re sympathizing with the bad guys?” A note of incredulity crept into his voice, though he mostly sounded like he was teasing.

Though I’d grown up being one of the bad guys, I knew he didn’t honestly believe that I’d sympathize with his adversary. No, I was enthralled with his new safe. It was a Vault, a special edition safe from Vault and Security. They made between ten and fifty of a single design, each with a continuous weld and 6-gauge steel. I’d heard rumors that the locking bolts extended four inches into the frame, and that it contained a secondary set of locking bolts in the body of the safe that extended and twisted to form an even stronger bond. In order to get into that safe without knowing the combination, a thief would have to be a fucking awesome safe cracker, which I was, or they’d have to use an explosive to open it. A pry bar, ax, or sledgehammer wouldn’t work. The idea of getting into that thing made me wet. “I think I’m in love.”
