KB Review: She Laughs in Pink by Jessica Calla

She Laughs In Pink (Sheridan Hall #1)She Laughs In Pink by Jessica Calla
My rating: Tickled Pink

I read the first chapters of She Laughs in Pink when I was judging the first round of a writing competition. It stayed with me. From time to time, I’d think of it and wonder if it was ever published. Since it was a contest, author names weren’t included. As a forgetful person, I wouldn’t have remembered anyway–as I also forgot the title. As an author, I reasoned that people change titles all the time prior to publication.

But the characters stayed with me. Juliet–confident, driven, and seemingly perfect–I knew she was hiding some kind of tragic past. Chase–wry, emotional, and determined–He’s the kind of hero who tugs at your heartstrings, especially because you know he’s going to turn out to be his own worst enemy.

And the writing style stayed with me as well. Calla makes her characters vibrant and real, utterly entrancing, and she knows how to start a story with the right amount of tension.

I loved following Chase and Juliet through their journey as they navigate adulthood and try to figure themselves out. Their story was beautiful and poignant, and I’m so happy that I finally got to read the rest of the book!

(I know I’m behind on the series, but I aim to change that fairly quickly.)

Four years after her twin is murdered, Juliet Anderson still struggles with guilt, her parents, and her relationships. Two things keep her from falling into a deep, dark place—dancing and her best friend, Ben. So when Ben decides to play football for New Jersey University, Juliet doesn’t hesitate. She follows. Finally away from her past, there is nothing to stand in the way. Juliet will win Ben’s heart.

Then she meets Ben’s roommate, Chase.

On probation and hell-bent on adhering to a “new life plan,” aspiring artist Chase leaves his New York City home for New Jersey University and meets Juliet before even stepping foot on campus. For him, their connection is instant. She’s the most vibrant girl he’s ever seen. Her colors explode on his canvas, and he’s never been more inspired in his life.

Too bad she’s madly in love with his seemingly perfect, good guy roommate
